History of ORIGAMI

There is more to origami than these simple models would lead us to believe. Origami comes from the Japanese words for folding, ori , and the Japanese word for paper, kami . When combined, kami becomes gami and the word is origami. It shares the same origin but has taken two distinct avenues of development since its creation. There is more to origami today than just paper-folding. Origami has a long history in the east and west and a sophistication which is more artistic than a mere craft. The following is the story of the east and west in origami.

The Basic Materials

Before one can discuss the art of origami itself, we must look at the material used in creating the art. Paper is the material used in origami and paper was invented in China. In 250 B.C., the Chinese savant M^ng T''ien invented the camel hair brush. It revolutionized the writing of Chinese characters. But Chinese characters were being printed on cloth and the cost of making cloth to write upon was expensive. An alternate material was needed to write upon which was more practical. A Chinese eunuch by the name of Ts''ai Lun invented a material by which we call paper today to replace cloth as a writing surface. His invention didn''t arrive until 105 A.D. This paper was "a thin, felted material formed on flat, porous moulds from macerated vegetable fiber" and unlike the papers used in other parts of the world. As examples, some of those other papers were made by peeling bark off in thin sheets and allowed to dry or in the case of papyrus, the plants were separated into fibers and matted together into sheets.

The late 19th century brought east and west together during a conference in Paris. This conference however gave rise to pioneers in the art of origami. From the west, we have Ligia Montoya and Adolfo Cerceda. From the east, there is Isao Honda and Akira Yoshizawa. A second meeting took place in Argentina. A third and simultaneous meeting took place in New York City. It was led by Lillian Openheimer who created the Origami Center in New York City for the United States.

Origami, by the late 19th century, became more of a recreational activity or children''s diversion and most of the eastern symbolism was taken over by western influence. Western considerations include the "Creation out of nothing" according to Vicente Palacios. Origami is the measure of the simplest practicality with most models being made from a white square piece of paper, a departure from the flatness of the paper. The eastern tradition was based in the application of colour and fantasy, the bolder the better.

Akira Yoshizawa in the 1930''s brought about a major revolution in the art of origami. He developed new forms from surviving traditional models, his dedication to origami has reestablished it as a creative art form, personally created over 50,000 works and has placed an emphasis on sensitivity of form and accuracy in design. If he were to create a book per year to catalog all of his models, it would take over 2000 years to complete. These books would take so long to complete because he would have to record all the steps required to fold each of the models. He is also continuing to creating new models quite prodigiously but has slowed down to start the recording of the steps involved in making them.

Origami has been used as educational and scientific tools. Friedrich Froebel based his ''Froebel'' blocks on origami and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy of the Bauhaus used origamiin architectural designs. Origami appeals to the puzzle-solving branch of mathematics as wells as in the teaching of geometry. Robert Harbin brought the western world, specifically England and the United States, into greater appreciation of the art. He is a stage illusionist and collected and developed origami designs. He published a book titled Paper Magic in 1956. Since then, tens of thousands of designs have appeared from many artists in many books.

Origami is only now achieving western respect as a medium in art. It has provided a deeper awareness for eastern culture where paper arts are held in high esteem. Origami takes shape in pop-up books, greeting cards and traditional crafts. It generally adheres to strict rules of form. Most people generally prefer no cutting or tearing of the paper, no gluing or decorating, use a single piece of paper for each model and most of the paper is a perfect square. There is a wood-block print (see figure 5) made in 1819 by Katsuhika Hokusai titled "A Magician Turns Sheets of Paper Into Birds". The print represents the eastern philosophy and attitude towards origami as well as its consideration as art.
